Developing Valid Level 2 Evaluations

Consider the last training event that you conducted.  Did participants learn what they need to know?  Did the training build competency?  If yes, can you prove it?

To establish real credibility and prove the value of training, you need to measure whether or not participants actually learned something.  Unfortunately, measuring learning is not something many workplace learning and performance professionals do well.  For example, WLP professionals uninformed in the art and science of test creation often develop questions that contain obvious clues to the correct answer.  Other questions are overly difficult and discourage participants from getting the right answer.  Neither question results in a knowledge test that is fair to both the participant and the organization – the overarching goal of any valid Level 2 evaluation.

In this session, you will examine four overall guidelines for conducting Level 2 evaluations and seven test creation guidelines for developing knowledge tests that are fair.  In addition, you will analyze common mistakes made by many workplace learning and performance professionals in developing multiple choice, true/false, fill in the blank and matching questions.  You will apply techniques that eliminate those mistakes and result in the development of valid Level 2 evaluations.

You will also be able to meet new people in training and development and expand your network of professionals who can be helpful to you.
